2009 Planting Recommendations

Keys to Wheat Variety Selection

"Precision Placement" of wheat varieties is necessary to take full advantage of their genetic potential.

Plant at least 2 and preferably 3 varieties with different heading dates to reduce weather risk and spread harvest. To avoid freeze damage no more than 1 early or medium-early heading variety should be planted.

Recommended Dyna-Gro wheat varieties for 2009 planting:

• Shirley is a "new" wheat variety that has consistently produced high yields averaging 93 bushels per acre the past 3 years in VA OVT. It is a full-season heading variety with very good resistance to powdery mildew and leaf rust. It has moderate resistance to head scab.
• Dominion is a medium-late heading variety with very good consistent yields. It has moderate resistance to powdery mildew and leaf rust and has moderate resistance to head scab. Dominion responds to intensive management.
• Tribute continues to have the highest test weight of available varieties and has averaged 90 bushels per acre the past 3 years in VA OVT. New races of mildew have made it susceptible to powdery mildew. A fungicide spray is recommended when planting this variety. It is a medium-late heading variety that still has the production advantages that have made it one of the top varieties grown over the past few years. Avoid soils with a history of soil borne mosaic virus.

• V9723 is an excellent choice for all soil types. It is a very high yielding medium heading variety. V9723 has excellent straw strength and responds to high N rates. Avoid areas prone to head scab.
• V9713 should be planted early on productive soils to take advantage of its yield potential. It has very good resistance to soil borne mosaic virus and moderate resistance to head scab. It is a late heading variety that is day-length sensitive.
• McIntosh is a medium-early heading variety that is an excellent choice for lighter soils. It is an efficient user of N. Avoid high rates of N on highly productive soils.
• V9510 is an early heading variety for North East NC, and Virginia to Delaware. V9510 has consistently produced 88 to 90 bushels per acre with very good test weights in VA OVT. It has moderate resistance to powdery mildew and leaf rust.
• Oglethorpe is an early heading, high yielding variety for the southern growing areas (Carolinas to Louisiana). It is an efficient user of N. Highest yields are obtained with moderate levels of N.
